X-TRA is a quarterly journal of art criticism published in Los Angeles since 1997. Recognizing the limitations of the local art press, X-TRA founders Ellen Birrell and Stephen Berens conceived of the magazine as a way to provide a more expansive outlet for artists and writers to engage in critical discourse about the visual arts in Los Angeles.
